According to Facebook, the company powering the most popular social network has been attacked severely. Repeating attacks have occurred on Friday, but the hackers weren’t identified yet. It is not certain if the users’ data has been affected or not. This huge attack was discovered by Facebook’s security staff. They have characterized the attacks as complex attacks, being announced on the blog on Friday. However, they have managed to identify the source of the malicious actions, which was a website meant for mobile programmers. This discovery had also set the date to last month, being the actual date of the attack. That particular developer website was accessed by some Facebook employees.
The findings related to this cybernetic attack don’t resume themselves to Facebook only. Facebook representatives had claimed that Facebook was just one of the many attacks by the same group of hackers. They believe that other companies might have been attacked in the past weeks or months. Prior to the attack which targeted Facebook, another important social network, Twitter, was also targeted. Twitter’s representatives had announced the attack, which resulted in users’ accounts being hacked. The hackers had access to at least 250.000 users’ accounts. Thus, these hackers earned valuable information, getting to know users’ names and email addresses.
Social markets weren’t the only preferred niche of the hackers. Websites of famous newspapers have been important targets of attacks. The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal as well as The New York Times have been attacked recently. While it is only an assumption, it is almost certain that the hackers attacking these newspaper websites were from China.
The real problem and concern about the Facebook attacks is what users might think or what they might fear. The truth is that once you see that your privacy may end instantly upon any cyber-attack and your private data may be accessed by hackers if they break through the protection system, you might lose your confidence in Facebook’s ability to keep your data private.
Facebook is already known for disputes about the privacy and about handling personal information. Facebook had organised a federal privacy examination, back in 2011. The reason for this is because an infected file has been found on one of the laptops of Facebook employees. This infected file which had been detected and found on that one laptop had also been detected on some other laptops as well. This is a proof of how only a weak point in security can break down an entire system.
Thanks to the investigations, Facebook has now added brand new security features on the 1st of February, to avoid such future attacks.
